Embracing Sensitivity, Nurturing Strength.
High Sensitivity, often referred to as Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS), is a natural personality trait found in about 15-20% of the population. It is not a disorder or a condition, it is simply a way of experiencing the world more deeply. Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) have a nervous system that’s finely tuned, meaning they process sensory information, emotions, and subtleties more intensely than others. They have greater activations in brain regions (mostly the mirror neuron system) which are linked to empathy and awareness.

This might look like noticing small changes in non-verbal communication, faint smells others miss, feeling overwhelmed in noisy environments, or being deeply moved by art, music, or nature. Research by Dr. Elaine Aron, who pioneered the study of HSPs, shows that this trait is innate, meaning it is something you are often born with and it is linked to a greater awareness of both the external world and your internal landscape. For HSPs, life can feel vivid and rich, but it can also come with challenges like overstimulation or emotional exhaustion.
"Choosing a counsellor can feel like a big step, especially when you’re highly sensitive. I’ve been there too. If you’re curious about whether we would be a good fit, I would love to hear from you. Feel free to reach out with any questions, or just to say hello. There’s no pressure, only an open door."
What Does It Mean to Be a Highly Sensitive Person?
Being a Highly Sensitive Person means you experience the world with a heightened sense of awareness. It’s like having an amplifier for your senses and emotions, everything comes through a little louder, brighter, and deeper. You might find yourself tearing up at a beautiful sunset, feeling overwhelmed by feeling other people’s emotions, or needing quiet time after a busy day to recharge.
HSPs often share some common characteristics, such as:
- Deep empathy: You feel others people’s emotions as if they were your own, making you a natural listener and supporter.
- Rich inner world: You might spend a lot of time reflecting, daydreaming, or processing your thoughts and feelings.
- Sensitivity to overstimulation: Crowds, loud noises, or chaotic environments can leave you feeling overwhelmed, stressed, frazzled or drained.
- Attention to detail: You notice the little things, like a shift in someone’s tone, change in light, or a change in the room’s energy.
For many HSPs, this trait is a gift. It brings creativity, intuition, and a profound connection to others and life. But it can also feel overwhelming, especially in a fast-paced world that doesn’t always make space for sensitivity. That’s where understanding and support can make all the difference.
How do I know if I am Highly Sensitive?
You may recognise some of the elements of what has been mentioned above and feel you align with them. If you wish, you can also do a simple self-assessment following the links below for more information.
PLEASE NOTE: These self-quiz tests have been carefully developed by researchers and are provided as a general guide only and are intended to help you reflect on your experiences or behaviours. They should only be considered as an estimated indication of one’s sensitivity. They are not a substitute for a professional diagnosis or personalised advice. HSP traits can overlap with conditions like autism or anxiety, but Sensory Processing Sensitivity is distinct as a non-pathological trait. Self tests do not take into consideration other elements such as culture, age, gender, nationality, past experiences, upbringing or other conditions, and may not fully capture your unique situation. If you have concerns about your behaviour, your child’s behaviour, or your mental wellbeing, I strongly recommend consulting your doctor for a thorough assessment and tailored support.
How Can a Counsellor Help with High Sensitivity?
As a counsellor with a focus on Highly Sensitive People, I’m here to help you embrace your sensitivity as a strength while navigating it’s challenges. Counselling offers a safe, quiet space to explore what it means to be an HSP and develop strategies to thrive in a world that can sometimes feel too much.
Here’s how I can support you:
- Understanding your trait: Together, we can unpack how high sensitivity shows up in your life, and better understand its impact in your relationships, work, or your daily life, and celebrate what makes it unique to you.
- Managing overwhelm: I’ll help you gain practical tools to cope with overstimulation, like setting boundaries, creating calm routines, or finding ways to recharge without guilt.
- Embracing your strengths: Sensitivity often comes with incredible gifts of empathy, creativity, and insight. We can work on harnessing your strengths to boost your confidence and sense of purpose.
- Healing old wounds: Many HSPs carry experiences of being told they are “too sensitive” or “overreacting.” Counselling can help you process these messages and rewrite the narrative around your sensitivity.
I am a highly sensitive person myself. My approach is gentle and tailored to your needs, because I know HSPs don’t thrive with a one size fits all solution. Whether you’re feeling misunderstood, exhausted, or just curious about your trait, I’m here to walk alongside you with compassion and understanding.
Why Work with a Highly Sensitive Counsellor?
As a highly sensitive person, I bring a unique perspective to our work together. Here’s what that might mean for you:
The Gifts
- Deep Empathy: I get it. I feel it. I have struggled with it and have felt like I didn’t quite belong here. I know the highs and the lows. I understand the intensity, the overwhelm, and the quiet but incredible beauty of sensitivity. I’m here to hold space for all of it with care and understanding.
- Noticing the Unseen: My attunement to subtleties helps us explore what’s beneath the surface, even when words are hard to find.
- A Gentle Pace: Our sessions are a sanctuary, tailored to feel safe and supportive for your sensitive nature.
The Considerations
- Shared Resonance: I may feel your emotions deeply too, but I’m skilled at keeping our focus on you.
- Thoughtful Boundaries: I take care to recharge so I can be my best for you, which might mean a slower pace at times.
- Best Fit: My style suits those who value reflection over rapid-fire solutions. If that’s not you, I’ll support you in finding what is.
Ultimately, my sensitivity is both my strength and my guide. If you’re a highly sensitive person seeking a counsellor who truly understands, I’d be honoured to walk alongside you.
