Grief & Loss Therapy
Navigating grief and loss can be challenging. No two people grieve in the same way and grief changes for us rapidly, leaving us feeling as though we are losing control.
We often think of death when we think of grieving, but we can grieve many things in our lives: divorce, infertility, miscarriage, the loss of a job, long term or terminal illness, our innocence as we experience challenges, our career as we move into retirement, the loss of a dream or goal to injury for example as well as the loss of a pet, family member, friend or colleague.
Grieving is a complex process that we do not need to move through alone. Better understanding of what you are experiencing can help in negotiating this period with professional support.
Expression & Validation
Sometimes we may wish to tell people we are ok because we don’t want to worry them. Or maybe other family members are grieving too and we don’t want to add to their worries. Sometimes we tell people that we are ok as we don’t want to make them uncomfortable. Sometimes people avoid those grieving because they don’t know what to say. You can talk openly with me.
Coping Strategies
There are a few coping styles that we naturally utilise to process our grief. These sometimes do include unhelpful emotions such as blame, distraction, denial or social withdrawal. There are also a few different grieving styles that we each have, some people wish to talk, some grieve more cognitively. Through counselling sessions you will gain an understanding of your grief and postive, helpful strategies.
Modern Approaches to grief
Societies understanding and approach to grief has changed over time. More recent recommendations of methods to approaching grief focus on integrating the loss rather than ‘resolving’ the grief.
